Description
Educating people on environment has been an ongoing process for many years. However, now educators and science professionals are beginning to realize that, if Environmental Education (EE) is started earlier in a student's life, then students will have a better chance of grasping and implementing the knowledge into their everyday life. In this study, one section of second grade special education students, students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), will be taught EE concepts by a series of different methods including the mosaic methods, play-based methods, a series of short lectures, online activities, and other various hands-on activities and worksheets. Hands-on activities accompanied by other teaching methods will be the key to getting the special education students involved in the EE activities. The factors that will be measured throughout this study include the ability of students to absorb and understand the different environmental concepts, and the student's ability to implement environmental topics in their classroom. Statistical and observational analysis was completed to determine if any significant improvements were seen between the initial pre-test to the post-test. By students being taught EE in early ages and be actively involved in environmental activities it will allow for them to obtain and apply valuable environmental information throughout their lives.
