Description
This dissertation research aims to contribute to sustainability education through implementing a curriculum designed to improve the relationship between humans and the natural world. The curriculum, titled Composing Music Inspired by Nature , provides piano teachers with the means to instruct their students in composing music inspired by experiences in the natural world. The objective of the research was to learn what piano teachers thought and felt about the process of implementing the curriculum and how this process influenced their thoughts and feelings related to teaching composition and their relationship with the natural world. The research method was an analysis of in-depth interviews with piano teachers who implemented the curriculum, and the final report of the project tells the stories of these teachers. This study will be of interest to piano teachers who want to contribute to sustainability through their teaching and who additionally are interested in using a curriculum that provides the structure and tools for teaching music composition.
