History details the entire action of the battle from the first landing of a crippled B-29 to the conflict's bloody conclusion in a jungle of lava rocks. This collection also features WWII in HD: The Air War, the untold story of the American 8th Air Force's bloody battle to defeat the German Luftwaffe in the months leading up to D-Day. Told through the gripping, first person accounts of three American airmen and Stars & Stripes reporter Andy Rooney, this special showcases breathtaking aerial combat - original, color footage, never before seen by most Americans - of the B-17s Flying Fortresses, P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs on missions such as Regensburg, Schweinfurt and Berlin. The 8th Air Force suffered more than 26,000 combat deaths - more than the U.S. Marines lost in all of World War II.

DISC ONE. Darkness Falls: WWII in HD examines the initial phases of the war preceding American entry into the conflict. The United States sends troops to Guadalcanal and North Africa. Hard Way Back: WWII in HD follows United States soldiers as they begin their fight against the Axis in the Battles of Guadalcanal, North Africa, and Attu. Bloody Resolve: WWII in HD looks at the battles in of Tarawa, New Britian, and the Invasion of Siciliy. Battle Stations: WWII in HD looks at the war leading up to D-Day offering first hand accounts of the Battle of Kwajalein and the bombing raids over Germany.

DISC TWO. Day of Days: WWII in HD looks at first hand accounts of the Battle of Saipan and the Normandy Invasion. Point of No Return: WWII in HD examines for hand accounts of the Battle of Peleliu and the invasion of Germany. DISC FOUR: The Battle for Iwo Jima. The battle for Iwo Jima begins - one of the bloodiest of World War II. Follow the action in this series that details, week by week, the last six months of World War II and explores the high and low points of the march to war's end. During Operation Detachment, fighting becomes a brutal frontal attack of hand-to-hand combat. Both the portable and mechanized flamethrowers as well as LVTs (Landing Vehicle, Tracked) were vital during the intense battles on the volcanic island. Meanwhile in the Philippines, U.S. forces completely surround the center of Manila, as the tempo of the Japanese atrocities increases. Before long, General MacArthur will make an emotional return to Corregidor Island.
